There are things that men do not discuss openly because society have not openly created a space for us to do so. We have learned to internalize these feelings and move on with life. I have mastered this dance with emotions and when it swoops me up to do that cha cha, I now know when to gracefully decline. But there are days when I give in to the urge and go full tango. The hearts beats faster and I know that I am about to break into a sweat.
I have been a groomer/barber for the past twenty six years and this dance usually starts when I see a son accompanied by his father to get a haircut. Being raised by a strong black woman is a lot to be grateful for but there are times when the absence of my father and the sting of these emotions show up at the most unexpected times.
With every step to the restroom ( to get the hair our of my eyes, this is the story that has worked all these years ) I am grateful see another young boy having the presence of their father in their life.
Let’s get this haircut started. I truly applaud all the men who are breaking generational curses and being a constant in the lives of their sons.
